We’re On Track: New Westhill High School Advancing Toward Construction in April

The City of Stamford is proud to announce that the vision for the new Westhill High School is rapidly becoming a reality. As one of the largest and most advanced public high schools in Connecticut’s history, this transformative construction project has reached critical milestones that clear the way for ground-breaking this April.

Fun Fact:  At approximately 450,000 square feet, the new Westhill footprint will make it one of the largest high school buildings in the state. To put that size into perspective, the total floor space will equal roughly one-fifth of the Empire State Building—all designed across a beautiful 32-acre campus!

Building Excellence: Construction of the new Westhill High—the largest school project in CT history—officially kicks off this April.

Funding Approved

Following the recent authorization by the Board of Finance, the total projected project cost is $446 million. Thanks to a historic agreement, the State of Connecticut will fund 80% of eligible costs—committing to an investment of over $350 million. This investment supports a truly modern learning environment, featuring

  • Nearly 100 classrooms and career-pathway spaces

  • Cutting-edge science labs

  • Enhanced athletic facilities and fields.

The new Westhill High School is designed to serve future generations of students with spaces that foster innovation, collaboration, and academic excellence.

Strong Industry Response:  Over 130 Bids Received

The scale and significance of this project have attracted significant interest from the construction community. The City received more than 130 competitive bids spanning landscaping, structural steel, roofing and interior finishes. This response confirms strong market confidence and positions the project to successfully transition from two years of design into active construction.

“Project teams are coordinating design details, reviewing logistics, and preparing for site activities to ensure that construction proceeds safely and efficiently. We’re looking forward to seeing Westhill students walking through the doors of this extraordinary new school by 2029,” said Katherine LoBalbo, School Construction Director for the City of Stamford.

What’s Next?

While planning has been underway for three years, the "heavy lifting" is about to begin. Site activity will increase following the April groundbreaking, marking an exciting new chapter for the community.

Progress updates will continue to be shared at spsbuilds.com as we build a brighter future for Stamford’s students.
